Youth Activities Program

PURPOSE: The purpose of the Youth Activities Program is to foster school aged youth interest in wireless communication technology, and encourage their future career in wireless. To pique the interest of youth, RCA's Youth Activities Program uses amateur radio as a vehicle to introduce wireless concepts.

The Youth Activities program is chaired by RCA Director Carole Perry WB2MGP and has Richard Somers, Stan Reubenstein, Ernie Blair, and Charles Kirmuss as committee members.

Scholarships are available for deserving youth. Applicants should complete the application linked below along with the accompanying referral also linked below.

Donate to Youth Activities

The Richard G. Somers Youth Scholarship Fund was established in 2009, through a generous donation from the fund’s namesake, to encourage and support educational, technical, ham radio and related activities of young people through high school.

Your tax deductible donation to RCA Youth Activities will enhance what the Somers fund started, and would be greatly appreciated. We can accept your donations via Check, Money Order, PayPal or Credit Card. Click the button below for RCA’s donation form and check the box “Youth Activities”:

Young Ham Lends a Hand Contest

The Young Ham Lends a Hand contest honors a young licensed amateur radio operator who exemplifies the spirit of volunteerism—one of the core values of amateur radio. Nominees may have contributed through activities both within and beyond the amateur radio community.

If you know a deserving young ham who has made a meaningful impact, we invite you to submit a brief nomination (one paragraph) explaining why they should be recognized. Nominations must be submitted by April 1 and emailed to Carole Perry.

Selected recipients will be awarded a $100 gift from the Radio Club of America.

The application window for 2025 Young Achiever Scholarships has closed. The next opportunity for submission will be January 1, 2026.
